2 Management of website contents
The management of the structure, functions and contents of a website developed with the Siteseed is carried out via a back office based on a web interface, acessible with a common web browser. We recommend the use of the Explorer 5 or later versions or Netscape Navigator 6 or later versions, with a 800x600 or larger pixel screen area. Under Microsoft Windows a visual WYSIWYG editor based on active X technology is also available.
2.1 Access to the back office
Access to the back office is made by typing the address in the web browser:
http:// URL of the website /bo
Example: If we want to enter the back office of the www.siteseed.pt website then type in the URL:
http://www.siteseed.pt/bo
When entering the back office, the user ought to type his/her login and password. These are supplied by the system administrator responsible for the website. Where the login or password are incorrect, the web browser will ask you to repeat the procedure. If the login and password are correct, the main page of the back office will appear similar to that set out below:
There are always three options available on the upper back office bar:
Menu – enables you to get back to the main menu from any point in the back office.
Notes – Back office message management interface. This option allows you to see those messages sent to you, send messages to other back office users or to attach notes to articles or page objects.
Manual – Enables access to the Siteseed online manual. In order to use this option internet access is required.
The back office options are grouped into three different areas:
the journalist interface (visible to journalists, editors and technical staff members)
the editor interface (visible to editors and technical staff members)
the technician interface (visible to technical staff members)
Siteseed content development and management works according to a news desk logic. The journalist options are used essentially to create new contents, change already existing contents or to receive and manage visitors feedback.
The editorial options allow the approval of contents due to be made available on a website, as well as managing the format the information is to take on each website page. Editors decide what articles appear on the website and where and when they are displayed.
Finally, the technical staff creates and alters the website structure. From this interface, it is possible to manage the logical structure of a website, prepare all the graphic interface components, define the active functions and further manage the list of system users.
This segmentation into three categories is purely indicative as the Siteseed enables the definition of fully personalised profiles. A journalist can, for example, approve articles on a certain subject or even have limited access to some of the website visual components.
In the picture, there are many options visible which may not be available on entering the back office. This is due to the fact that the interface and available options change in accordance with the profile defined for each staff member.
